“Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.”
Stephen Hawking
At Holy Cross we believe that scientific knowledge, study and investigation should be a core part of all our pupil’s learning and development.
Science is a subject that, perhaps more than any other, can produce in young minds a sense of wonder and amazement. Whether a child is learning about rainforests and different ecosystems, discovering that the Earth is a giant magnet, or learning about human anatomy, scientific enquiry offers children of all ages a hands-on and practical way of engaging with and understanding the world around them.
Children fully engage with a range of scientific topics that progress in sophistication and challenge across the years and through the different Key Stages. Children plan, undertake and review their own investigations. They develop a thorough and rounded knowledge of different scientific topics, many of which have cross-curricular links to other subjects. Children develop transferable skills, such as those needed for analysis, investigation and research, and the impartial evaluation of evidence.
Children are introduced to a wide range of influential scientists from around the world and from all periods of history, learning about their life and times and the significance of their contribution to knowledge. We are also very conscious of the increasing need to manage the planet’s natural resources in a responsible way, and our team of dedicated Eco Warriors promote awareness of Green and Environmental issues throughout the school.

Holy Cross School is part of the Lewisham Ogden Trust Primary Partnership which helps to build and sustain supportive, collaborative teaching communities that bring about improvement in physics education, engagement and positive learning environments for children. We have made a commitment to undertake this work to benefit our children.
